NANAIMO — Ninety-one per cent of Hullo Ferry workers have voted in favour of job action following the employer’s refusal to bargain fairly for a first collective agreement. “This result shows just how united Hullo workers are,” said Eric McNeely, president of the BC Ferry & Marine Workers’ Union (BCFMWU). “They know their worth and […]
For immediate release August 29, 2025 NANAIMO — Hullo Ferries has declared an impasse in bargaining, forcing the union to take a strike vote. “We don’t want to disrupt service, but our members can’t wait forever,” said Eric McNeely, president of the BC Ferry & Marine Workers’ Union. “Our members would rather be […]
The union hall will be closed Labour Day but help is only a call away. Local presidents and shop stewards will be available for support. We know long weekends can be some of the toughest times on the job, and we’re grateful for your hard work and dedication. Labour Day is more than a long […]
I’ve been with BC Ferries for 13 years now, and it’s the best job I’ve ever had. I like the people I work with, and that makes a big difference. When I started, I was a cleaner. My goal from day one was to be a cashier. It took me six years of casual shifts, […]
Air Canada flight attendants, represented by CUPE, have reached a tentative agreement after days of pressure and picket lines. The deal ends unpaid work and stands as a historic win for free collective bargaining. The numbers tell the story: 84 per cent of customers rated their ferry experience positively in 2024–25, up 2 per cent from the year before. […]

I started working at BC Ferries when I was 21. I applied on a whim, got a call, went through the interview, and got hired as a seasonal catering attendant. That was eight and a half years ago, and I’ve stayed because I love the job itself. Working on a boat, being surrounded by a […]
1. We CAN build them here. Canada has the skilled workers, shipyards and suppliers to build ferries at home. Seaspan alone contributes $4.3 billion to B.C.’s GDP. That’s money for groceries, rent, tools, kids’ sports. Not shipped overseas. Learn more from BC Building Trades. 2. No Canadian bids? Not quite. Two Canadian shipyards pre-qualified, but […]
BC Ferries moves 22 million passengers and 9 million vehicles a year, operates 37 vessels across 25 routes and employs more than 4,500 people across the province. On paper, that size might justify a substantial management team. But the scale and growth of BC Ferries’ corporate structure raise questions. Since 2022, the company has added […]
