SICK LEAVE

Sisters, Brothers, Comrades,

As you are aware there have been recent sailing cancellations and reductions.  What you may not be aware of is that the vast majority of those cancellations have nothing to do with the health of our members. They are predictable and preventable and are the effect of a systemic problem resulting from inadequate company recruitment and retention policies for engineering staff.

That said, with cold and flu season upon us, Omicron running rampant and while COVID test kits are being pulled from worksites, it is an important time to remind everyone, if you do not feel 100% you should do a self-assessment and stay home if you feel unwell, with a quick notification to work.

Regulars are entitled to six (6) days of sick leave per year and STIIP for up to 6 months (at a reduced rate).  Casuals with benefits are entitled to six (6) days of sick leave per year.  Casuals without benefits and more than 90 days at BCFS now receive five (5) days of sick leave per year.  Seasonals with more than 90 days at BCFS now receive five (5) days of sick leave per year.

If you have not been employed with BCFS for more than 90 days you may not qualify for paid sick leave but there are unpaid sick leaves you can access to ensure you do not infect coworkers and have time to heal and recover.

Stay healthy or stay at home.
