Changing directors is easy. Fixing BC Ferries is harder.

Friday’s BC Ferry Authority director shuffle should be the beginning of a serious public conversation about how our ferry system is being managed.

โ€œChanging directors is easy. Fixing BC Ferries is harder,” said BCFMWU President Eric McNeely.

โ€œBritish Columbians have watched ferry fares climb while delays and reliability have taken a hit. We deserve to know whether the current leadership and oversight model is delivering the accountability, transparency and value that we expect as taxpayers.”

Ferry workers have experienced years of service pressures, workforce shortages, deferred investment and growing frustration from the travelling public.

โ€œIf people are paying more at the ticket booth, they should also expect stronger accountability for how those decisions are made.

BCFMWU is calling for an independent public review of BC Ferries’ service delivery model.

โ€œWe believe it’s time for an independent public review of how major decisions are made at BC Ferries and whether the current model is delivering the best value, accountability and service for British Columbians,โ€ said McNeely.

โ€œJust changing the faces around the table won’t solve the underlying issues if the system itself isn’t delivering the results British Columbians expect and deserve.”
