Violence isn’t part of our jobs
This weekend, two of our members were violently attacked on the Spirit of British Columbia during the 7 a.m. sailing from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay. One crew member was punched and another was kicked and bitten while intervening to ensure the safety of crew and passengers.
We’re relieved our members are recovering, and we thank the off-duty police officer and crew who stepped in to help. But this should never have happened.
Ferry workers have the right to a safe workplace. They show up every day to keep people safe on our ships, and they shouldn’t be expected to endure violence as part of the job. We’re calling on BC Ferries to review its protocols and procedures to provide stronger supports for frontline crews who are increasingly dealing with unpredictable and dangerous situations.
We will continue to push for safer working conditions and real protections for our members.
In solidarity,
