President’s update: Tragedy, advocacy and change

This past week, our union stood in solidarity with the Filipino-Canadian community following the tragic deaths at the Lapu-Lapu festival in Vancouver. We also marked the National Day of Mourning alongside DDC President Christine Shakespeare, remembering fallen workers as we approach the 5th anniversary of Kenny Chohan’s death on the job.

The federal election has wrapped up with the Liberals staying in power—but ferry workers on the West Coast still deserve fair federal funding. On Route 6, Salt Spring Islanders are voicing concerns over proposed home port changes that could impact working hours. Meanwhile, access issues continue for passengers with mobility challenges on the Northern Adventure due to ongoing elevator delays.

There’s been a leadership change at Hullo, with Ryan Dermody stepping in as interim CEO. Eric also connected with the Little River maintenance team after their week of repair work in Haida Gwaii, and met with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith while attending WESTAC.

This week’s air traffic control crisis at YVR reminds us how essential a skilled, available workforce is—something ferry operations know well. And yes, your new member website is live! You should have received your login credentials by now.

In a surprising move, BC Ferries plans to make the Departure Bay–Horseshoe Bay route fully reservation-only this fall. That means part of the Trans-Canada Highway will now require a booking.

Lastly, we’re still waiting on a decision from the Dispute Resolution Panel regarding our 2025 wage reopener. We’ll keep you posted.
