Bargaining Update #4

Union Bargaining Update AMENDMENT

The following update is provided for the information of BCFMWU members only. Please do not post on bulletin boards or share on social media.

Over the past weeks your BCFMWU Central Negotiating Committee has met with BC Ferries Management Lead Negotiating Committee.

In discussions on the general and special wage reopeners we were able to find common ground and perspectives on areas such as the need to address low wage earners at BC Ferries and the value of many skilled and experienced employees to a complex ferry system. We note the experiences you shared with our committee through the bargaining survey was impactful and acknowledged by management representatives after reading the themes and some quotes the Union provided as part of our proposal package.

However, over the course of negotiations there were areas that we were not able to find common ground on. Those areas include, but are not limited to, your base wages, wages for the Ships’ Officers, trades rates of pay at DPM and across the terminals, as well as wage compression.

While acknowledging productive discussions over the past weeks, a best and final proposal was tabled by the Employer. The Union declared impasse under Article 35.02 and the bargaining protocol agreement process.

The Central Negotiating Committee will continue to update the membership as appropriate information can be relayed.

On behalf of your Central Negotiating Committee,
